The 49th Congressional District covers a long stretch along the Southern California coast. It includes parts of both San Diego and Orange counties. It starts in La Jolla in the south and goes all the way north to Ladera Ranch. It includes Rancho Santa Fe, Solana Beach, Carlsbad, Encinitas, Vista, Oceanside, parts of La Jolla, Del Mar, Fallbrook and Camp Pendleton in San Diego County; and San Clemente, Dana Point, San Juan Capistrano, Ladera Ranch, Las Flores and part of Mission Viejo in Orange County.
